Focus Yachts, based in the Netherlands, have added to their lineup of premium yachts 36-50 feet by launching the new X series. The Focus 3X is a versatile 37-footer that can be a standalone dayboat, a posh weekender, or a tender to a superyacht. It’s designed to change from a private sport cruiser to a luxury day boat at the touch of a few buttons and does so with dramatic effect.

Versatile Design: Enclosed To Open

The key to the metamorphosis is the six-foot windows on either side of the cabin house. Both port and starboard windows lower electrically to open the cockpit and helm area and with the added electric sunroof above, the boat takes on a whole new character transforming from enclosed to quite open. This dual personality is perfect for a superyacht tender ferrying guests in privacy to dinner, and then providing the wind-in-the-hair experience of an open cruiser when running to a pristine beach.

Luxury Day Boat Or Superyacht Tender

Of course, the Focus 3X isn’t just a tender. It makes a great primary yacht given its spacious deck and cozy cabin below. The cockpit is available in two layouts. In both versions, a large triple central sunbed is aft with walkaround paths on both sides, but then you choose between an athwartship table with two rows of facing seating or a corner banquette with a foldout table. The corner settee seems to have less wasted space and more seats for guests and would be my pick.

Helm Station

The helm in the starboard forward corner has two bucket seats for the driver and a companion. Just ahead is a 6-foot leather-trimmed dash with twin 16-inch MFDs, one on either side of the Isotta steering wheel. Above, there’s room for three smaller screens to display engine information or systems status.

Bow Area

On the bow, there’s a double sunbed but unlike on other models where a cushion is simply plopped on the foredeck, this sunbed has a lower profile and integrates right into the deck for a sleeker profile and a more upmarket effect. Altogether, The Focus 3X can accommodate 10 for a day trip or four for a weekend excursion.

Aft Cockpit & Stern Features

Aft is my favorite feature with the “transformer” hydraulic swim platform that rises to 16 inches above its starting position or to two feet below the waterline. This is a showstopper that can be elevated to comfortably step onto a dock or quay, or it can lower to form a teak beach where to put on your snorkel gear. The mechanics of this swim platform eliminate the need for a separate passerelle that would take up valuable transom real estate.

Cabin Interior

Now for the twist on the day boat concept. Step below to an interior with standup headroom, a full forward master cabin and an enclosed head with twin sinks and a shower. The salon has a straight settee to port with a hi/lo table that converts to a second bed so you can take guests or kids for an overnighter. The galley is across on starboard with a cooktop and a 30-gallon fridge. Large hull windows bring in plenty of light so you never feel buried in the hull and with 50 gallons of fresh water, you could effectively spend a long weekend aboard in complete comfort. There are numerous ways to personalize the 3X since Focus prides itself on developing unique client solutions in finishes.

Power Options

The Focus 3X comes with plenty of propulsion options – six to be exact. The recommended version includes twin Yanmar 370-hp engines but you can also opt for Mercruisers with stern drives, Volvo Penta D4s or even two Mercury Verado V10 400-hp outboards. Of course, that last choice will eliminate the amazing swim platform. The top speed is expected to be 50 knots so she’s no slouch.

The new Focus 3X will be on the water in the next two months but it will make its formal debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in France in September and since the company has partnered with YachtCreators in the US, you can expect to see one on these shores soon. Versatility on the water with elegance to boot- what a winning combination.
